Marseille is a must do day out whilst staying in Provence. Its about 90 minutes drive from Saint Saturnin Les Apt, parking is easy and reasonably charged.
The Petit Train is a great way to see the highlights.
The Vieux Port is a big draw with its busy harbour where you can take boats to and nearby Islands. There is also a morning fish market which takes place near the mirrored cover which was designed by Sir Norman Foster. Its a great spot for a selfie!
The port is overlooked by the statue of Madonna and child at the top of the Catholic basilica from which there are spectacular views.
Two of the more recent buildings that are worth visiting are the Mucem museum and villa ‘Mediterranee’ and the space around Fort Saint Jean and La Joliette
Marseille Cathedral is huge! well worth a visit and dating to 1893.
Our visit coincided (planned in advance) with the Bastille day fireworks which were spectacular lasting some 30 to 40 minutes over the port. There were apparently some 200,000 people there.
There is lots more to see, the old part of the city, some great shopping, history and beautiful buildings as well as some fine restaurants. Its worth at least one day or with the Fast TGV from London to Marseille a mini break. Enjoy….
